Email marketing continues to be one of the most effective forms of marketing that a small business can use. And, the rise of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets mean that you need to consider how your email will be viewed on these devices.

I looked at the statistics from one of our clients to see how their readers have changed email clients over the past two years. This client has a mid-sized list with a mix of personal and business addresses. Generally, a good cross section of our typical email readers.

Apple first introduced the iPhone in the summer of 2007, and these stats are from May 2010. Android usage was .3%, iPad was .5% and nearly 19% was undetectable. Also interesting is that Gmail had just 1.1%.

2012 Most Popular Email Clients

Fast forward two years and I pulled up this same client’s recent campaign.

The iPhone is now their number one (detectable) email client. Android is 3%. Note that 14% of this sampling was undetectable.

We recommend that you test all of your email campaigns across as many email clients as possible. When you work with us at Mail on the Mark, we do that when we set up your blueprint. But, as you can see, this needs to be something you continue to monitor as new technologies emerge and rise in popularity.
